Caleb Spell

Caleb Spell, creator of Little Mice comics is a 13-year-old homeschool student and resident of Dunkirk. Son of Jim and Grace Spell, Caleb is the oldest of four siblings and has loved comics ever since he was first introduced to Mutts by Patrick McDonnell around age 8. 

He started drawing his own comic strip, “Little Mice” during the pandemic and has been faithfully drawing one every day, with a colored comic on Sundays, ever since. He currently has hundreds of comic strips drawn illustrating three mice brothers and their furry friends in a variety of humorous situations. 

Over the years Caleb has enjoyed reading lots of books on the history of comics learning about strips such as Buster Brown and Krazy Kat as well as reading lots of comics by Davis, Watterson, and Schulz. 

When Caleb isn’t reading comic books or drawing his latest strip, you’ll find him reading, writing short stories, or causing mischief with his siblings. 

His family says, “He hopes that you enjoy his comics as much as he enjoys making them.”

Feaguing or Gingering

In medieval times, cunning horse dealers would do anything to sell older horses. One of their tricks is called feaguing, where a live eel was placed in the horse’s rectum. This would make the horse look livelier, carrying its tail well.

Gingering, or gingering the tail is the practice of making a horse carry its tail high, and to a lesser extent to encourage it to move in a lively fashion, by applying an irritant, such as raw ginger, to its anus or vulva. Historically the process, the purpose of which was often to make an older horse behave like one that was younger, or to temporarily liven up a sick or weakened animal, was known as feaguing (from which the modern term figging derives), and involved a piece of ginger, onion, pepper or tobacco. Francis Grose added in his Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue (1796) "and formerly, as it is said, a live eel", but that is very unlikely. The modern practice commonly involves a paste product with concentrated gingerol.

A mezzaluna is a knife consisting of one or more curved blades with a handle on each end, which is rocked back and forth chopping the ingredients below with each movement. They most commonly have a single blade, but are sometimes seen with two or three blades.

It is typically used for mincing herbs or garlic, but it can be used for chopping other things such as cheese or meat. Very large single blade versions are sometimes used for pizza. Common uses in Italy include preparation of a soffritto or a pesto, etc.

Malindi cult

The Good News International Ministries (GNIM), commonly known as the Malindi cult and previously as the Servant P. N. Mackenzie Ministries, is a new religious movement based in Shakahola, Kilifi, Kenya, that was founded by Paul Nthenge Mackenzie and his first wife in 2003.

The group attracted international attention in April 2023 when it was revealed that Mackenzie had allegedly instructed members to starve themselves en masse to "meet Jesus", resulting in the deaths of at least 110 people. The group, often described as a cult, is adamantly anti-Western, with amenities such as health care, education, and sports being dismissed as "evils of western life" and with Mackenzie condemning the United States, the United Nations, and the Catholic Church as "tools of Satan". The group also devotes much of its teachings to the end times. They purport to be followers of the End-Time Message of William Branham. Homicide detectives working the case said the group was radicalized by Branham's teachings, leading to their deaths.
